Come to Our Bakery Fair and Bicycle Rodeo!
Mark your calendars now! On Saturday, September 18th, Portland’s Grand Central Bakery will be putting our city spin on the classic county fair. Join us for the first annual Grand Central Bakery Fair: An Urban Farming Expo and Bicycle Rodeo. Our one-day family event celebrating harvest and community will take place between 10 am and 4 pm at our Fremont location in Portland (714 N Fremont) and will benefit Zenger Farms
and the Community Cycling Center with 100% of the day’s proceeds.
Special guest Novella Carpenter, urban farming expert and author of Farm City
, will kick off the program in the morning by sharing her experience creating and maintaining an urban farm in her Oakland, CA home. The day continues with a host of demonstrations, contests and activities for the entire family, including traditional (and not-so-traditional) fair favorites like baking and preserving contests, a judging of urban-grown produce, seminars and a bicycle rodeo. Purchase your tickets in advance at all Portland bakery café locations

Meet Novella Carpenter
Novella Carpenter was raised in 1970s Idaho by parents she describes as “back-to-the-land hippies.” Carpenter has been living off the land as an urban farmer in Oakland, CA for more than 10 years. There she cultivated a full blown farm that began with a few egg-laying chickens and grew to include beehives, turkeys, geese, goats, ducks, rabbits and two 300-pound pigs! In April 2010, she started another farm—more of a suburban one this time—in San Lorenzo, CA. One-acre, a barn and some fruit trees and fields make up LaBrie Family Farm.
Novella Carpenter is a graduate of the Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism, where she studied with Michael Pollan. She now writes about urban farming and sustainable food production for various publications, including her blog, Ghost Town Farm
, and in her memoir, Farm City, which was just released in paperback.
We’re thrilled to have Novella join us for the Bakery Fair, where she’ll read from her book and share experiences from the farm that are sure to inspire and educate.
